Long Awaited Update

So Finally it's all over with the application and the Wait Begins...

So in the end, I applied to Kellogg, Booth, and Ross.

Ross applications I felt okay with,
Booth was terrible, did it in like 3 days (didn't start until Ross was done)
Kellogg was the best of all my applications.

I planned my applications backwards, I started Kellogg first and didn't even think about Ross even though Ross was first due.

So now the wait.
Ross is amazing, they started sending out invitations for interviews 1/12 only 10 days after deadline.
Chicago started sending out interview invitations Yesterday.

Haven't heard from neither. Which SUCKS!

Kellogg, I'm done since I interviewed such a long time ago.
In retrospect, after completing Kellogg's Application, I felt like my response for the interview would have been like 1000% better if I had completed my application first. My motivation of others wasn't clearly defined in the interview as much as the essay had. Too late now, also if I can go back time, I would not say MONEY would be my deciding factors between school. I think that why the interview ended. Yeah bad move. But in the end it's still my best application.

Now to prey.. Hopefully Monday being the new year, would bring me good luck (it's supposed to be a good year for me)

Cheers

DINGED!

Got rejected at Columbia without interview. :( Although it hurts, I'm pretty much over it. Time to move on. Plus I didn't think I had that strong of a chance, does not seem to be an engineer friendly school, looking at the profiles.

One thing that sucks is that since columbia was my only round 1 school, and all applications are due in January, I have 4-5 months before I would hear of any acceptances or rejections. It's almost like putting your life on hold til march. Time to start working on my Essays again.

Here's my list.
Kellogg (since I've already interviewed)
Chicago (my number 1 choice)
Michigan Ross (Bumped of Berkeley because I like michigan program better)

Maybe:
Wharton (Hey a boy's gotta dream)
UCLA

That makes my applications a lot shorter. Since my class is kicking my butt, basicly since I've been doing so many things lately, I haven't done anything well. Grades are going into the trash. At least I'm done with Recruiting for UCLA, although it's only like 5 times, it's really tiring to talk for 2 hours straight.

Definitely feels like I've gotten to know the GMAT community a lot better now, since the chats are up. There is a chat right now about the new Business Week Rankings. Time to go check

Update

I remember why I don't keep a blog all the time, it's because when things start getting busy, I complete forget about blogging. Right now, I'm trying to balance out applications, work, and class. Midterm next saturday and I haven't started studying yet. But I think I'll start next week, since this week I'm going to SF to watch the undefeated Cal vs UCLA. It's one of those mixed feeling games, UCLA winning would be great for UCLA chances at a Pac-10 title, but Cal winning would keep USC out of the Rose Bowl.

Back to business school application updates.

COLUMBIA:
I finally submitted my application to Columbia, overall I believe my application was decent. In the end it is how much they are going to over look my GPA. It's been a sad couple of days, being so many people have been rejected lately from Columbia. Even my Twin, HappyBunny, who has like almost the same profile as me EXCEPT with a much better GPA and Female. It doesn't look good. Seems like most people who are accepted so far are finance or consulting background, no love for engineers.

KELLOGG:
Second depressing thing is that my Recommender FLAKED on me for my Kellogg Application, midday of due date, he was asking if it really needed to be done today and that he preferred not tonight it that night. So I rather have a decent letter of rec, then a badly written one. Kellogg is still one of the schools I really want to go to. So I'm just applying round 2.

Which now is the funny part, since i did PartI planning for Round 1, I already had my interview even though I haven't applied. My interview was yesterday, and here is basicly how it went.

Excerp from my post on GMATCLUB.

"Hope this helps

Just had my interview, don't know if it went good or bad, but it was long. Most of it was after the interview where we talked about our past, kellogg. I don't know if the interviewer would add the conversation to her notes or not. But lasted about one and a half hours. I'm hoping length is a good thing. My interviewer was really thorough, I think I got every question on the list. But we didn't really do a resume run through like most people have said. It was more like, Explain this job. (only asked about that)

Other than that here's basicly the questions.
What do you do at your job?
Why Engineering?
Why MBA? Future short term?
Did you concider MMM program? (since I'm an engineer)
Future Long term?
Weakness and Strength?
Deal with Conflict with others?
How have you motivated someone?
How will you contribute to Kellogg?

(Here's the Kicker-didn't see this one before) If you were to be accepted by every school, what would be the deciding factor for your choice? (Did not answer this one well, I answered truthfully, but not well)

Among your leadership/volunteer experiences (on the resume, non-work), which ones to you think are most important and why?

That's all I can remember, a couple of the questions I didn't answer very well (weakness/which school will I choose/motivation). But we did talk for a long time, and I think she basicly got who I am. Oddly enough, my weakness one was a really bad answer.

Forgot one more! Why type of problems do you usually have a harder time with? don't give specific problem, but catagory of problems. It was unusual question."

To elaborate more on how I did, I think I came off Honest, passionate, and intellegent. But I don't think I came off particurly strong in leadership, and maybe too technical, and didn't sound like I really wanted kellogg (which is kind of funny to me, since i really want kellogg my only round1 non-ED app.)

Starting with the bad. I think I was way too honest. When she asked what school I would get if I got into everyone, I said finance. I would probably go to whichever school is most affordable. Which to me sounds strange now, since I most likely would give up UCLA scholarship for Kellogg, and could have responded way better that I want kellogg, which is true, since i really like their mantra. But in reality, with the credit situation and family background. I can't waste money.

Which is where I sound honest, I don't think I had to bend any ideals I have to answer the question. (The engineer in me dominated) I sounded intellegent in that she asked the right questions, since i have been a forum whore for so long, I actually knew alot about the school, consulting life, MMM program, and visited the school, so all her answers were really easy, and my answers were really detailed and had alot of depth and research behind it.

Passion, that I think was just when we started talking about aerospace and volunteering, which is where I'm passionate about. (sometimes I sacrafice professionalism for passion, it was really casual conversation by then).

Leadership is always hard, since I don't really define leadership as most people do. The way I motivate people is also different, so I was honest about it all, but not sure if she liked it or not.

Weakness should have been that I'm direct- but from what I said my weaknesses are, she should know I'm direct. STUBBORN should not ever be stated as a weakness, although I am stubborn. Basicly not my best answer.

Other than that we had a long converstation about what she did, what I did after the interview was over. I don't know if that's positive or not. and the conversation was more like she talked for 5 minutes then I talk for 5 minutes. I think it was decent, but would have perferred an interviewer with consulting or technical background. Since I can just more technical terms and explain myself better. But overall it was okay.

Been an interesting couple of weeks

So I got rejected by the Riordan Program (Pre-MBA program by UCLA Anderson School). That was tough to take. But I'm over it and moved on.

Spend the past week in Chicago, Chicago GSB Live event at UChicago on 26 and then Kellogg's first lunch with students event on 29th.

Chicago - Went way up on my list

Chicago:
Amazing building state of the art, I think anyone going to the school would have to say the Building is the best from both the outside and inside. They were amazing in wining and dining us, we had breakfast, lunch, and dinner all provided. They served beer and wine at their LPF function (end of the week wind down).

Since it was the first couple days of class, we had a mock class. It was pretty boring the mock class, and although the professor sounds interesting, there is only so much you can do with TAXES! T company forms new T company, Which is owned by P company, which buys S company.. Yada Yada Yada.. (Shoot me Now!)

But everything else was exceptional, the people I met, both students and prospectives, were equally exceptional. You can definitely feel that you're in the presence of great Minds.

So as for Applications.. I have been holding off on my columbia applications, I think lack of deadline is hurting me. I have made several changes, and everyday I change it more and more, I think I am going to give myself until Thursday before I submit. But I think that's it, whatever I have on thursday I'm turning it in then moving on.

Finals are over - Time to focus

So finals are finally over, I can get back on applying.

First one up is Columbia, I've already thought about it a lot and spent way to much during my finals week contemplating what I wanted to write. Except now that I've finally sat down to write the essay it's a BUNCH OF RAMBLING going on. Actually that's just basically HOW I WRITE! Why can application be just a bunch of math problems, why am I such an Engineer! (yes there are engineers who can write, but how does that help me!)

I went to the info session last week, and now I want to go there more than ever!! I have so much I want to say, but it all comes out as, "Columbia is good yada, Columbia is great yada yada yada, I like Columbia..." Again CRAP!

So I'm one my 3rd draft on some of the essays, but it's funny cuz when I say draft I just mean I've started from scratch a rewrote dribble 3 times! At least it is long dribble. I wanted to get this submitted by Wednesday, but don't think that would happen concidering I have an interview with UCLA Riordan (Pre-MBA) program tomorrow night, and I'm cleaning up some of my files for that. But I don't think my recommenders will be ready so that's okay.

That brings me to a good note, I did get an interview for the Riordan program (it would be devastating not to even get an interview to a pre-MBA program, right before I'm applying to an MBA program). The other good note is that because of the riordan, I finally finished my Resume. I started over from scratch and I like how this new one looks. Been about 3 years since I had to do a REAL RESUME.

Oh since I'm all about good notes, I've submitted part I of the Kellogg application. I could have done it a month ago except I didn't really know what to put for job description. Now to wait for the interview (at least I know I'll get one, since kellogg interviews everyone)

The ball is finally rolling - Well until class starts again.

Goodluck to Everyone!! I look forward to seeing everyone at Business school.

Is it Worth it? What is it actually worth?

So in my Pursuit of an MBA, I guess I haven't really researched what it's worth. So today I am gonna focus on just that. What is it really worth?

First start with PAY,
Let's say I do get the 120K salary, is it worth it to me?

Using this amazing spread sheet by Ryguy904 http://gmatclub.com/forum/103-t64239
it is estimated that it will take me 7 years post graduation or 2018 just to break even. That's with the great salary, great bonus, huge benefits package.

I was talking with my friend this past weekend, and with his near 6 figure salary now, it will take him 12-15 years to break even. He may even make less after he graduates than he would without an MBA. I'm sure it makes sense if you were making 28K right now and got a full ride, but for people who make decent salaries, how much do we really gain? (BTW I do know someone who makes 28k full time with a college degree.)

So as always some people are gonna benefit more than others.

But what if I don't get the 120K, reading on the Business Week forums I came across two links
http://media.www.harbus.org/media/storage/paper343/news/2007/09/04/Features/Alumni.Perspective-2946965.shtml

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/08_33/b4096080728337.htm

Both HBS alums, Both serving at warning that the well advertise salaries are not what most people are gonna get and that there are 2 realities. The first link is an article, the part that I find interesting is where he states that there are "HBS graduates" and "Harvard MBA's." Know the difference. The second of which is a book, which I plan to start reading as soon as I'm done with finals. Although I do take most comments with a grain of salt. I do find both very interesting.

Third, is if I do get everything I want, the MBA, the 120K, the bonus package, what kind of life will I leave. If I was to work consulting hours now, am I really that far from the 120K concidering I have OT pay and I have a life now. I have relatives who are consultants (one at McKinsey). I have the impression that the lifestyle is pretty tough:
First, I had to schedule an appointment with her just to talk about MBA.
Second, she left the industry, she said straight out, "you go and do it, do well at it, and leave. Consulting is a way up, not a career."

And So It Begins...

Whoo whoo, my first post... I've decided that I should finally get around to posting my first post. I started this blog for a few reasons:

one is to have something to reflect on in the future. If I was to reapply this I hope that I learn something.

two is to pass on some of the information that I learned to everyone else in the blog sphere. I've read like 20-30 of these, and I'm sure everyone out there does the same. I want to include some websites some info, whatever that can help others.

three is I'm all MBA'ed out, I have so many things to think about that I hope putting it all down on paper (you know what I mean) would clear my head out.

A background about myself
Low GPA Engineering at a Top Public School (I'm sure it's not hard to guess which one)
Working on Online MS Engineering at Ala Mater

760/99th GMAT (50Q/95th, 44V/97th, 4.0 AWA)
Taken Once - 5/2007

3 Years Top Aerospace Company

My ever Changing list of schools right now stands at:
UCLA Anderson - R1
Columbia Early Decision
Northwestern Kellogg - R1
Chicago - R2
Wharton - R2
Hass - R2

Schools that keep popping up are
Michigan
Yale
Harvard
Stanford
NYU

This list is always changing. I think it is good for me to write it all down sometimes because in my mind I am always going I can add 2 more and then 2 more and then 2 more. Sometimes I'm just like AHHH!! need a break!

As of right now, I've only opened an application for UCLA, would probably start opening my applications for Kellogg and Columbia next.

Keep you all posted....

Sites that I find really helpful are:
http://blog.clearadmit.com/ - for up-to-date information, great layout of info

http://gmatclub.com/forum/103 - the information here is also up-to-date, however there are just a lot of threads which sometimes slows you down. I like Gmat club because it seems that the people are allow more supportive. The atmos is just better than say beatthegmats which i do like for other reasons.

http://www.businessweek.com/bschools/rankings/ I have he print copy which is a little nicer. But this works. With all rankings, make sure you agree with it. Everyone ranks differently. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_business_school_rankings
But I trust Business week the most.
